Zverev Triumphs Over Humbert to Secure Paris Masters Victory
Germany's Alexander Zverev captured his inaugural Paris Masters title with a decisive straight-set victory over France's Ugo Humbert. The world number two defeated the French number one 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday, marking his seventh ATP 1000 title win and second Masters title of the season.
Both players entered the final having played in three prior finals this year. Zverev, who reached the French Open final in June but fell to Carlos Alcaraz, secured his win at the Palais Omnisports in Bercy in just under 90 minutes. His semi-final victory on Saturday assured the 27-year-old German of his return to world number two, surpassing Alcaraz in the ATP rankings.
Humbert, the 26-year-old world number 18, impressed the home crowd with his performance throughout the tournament, notably defeating Alcaraz in the last 16. He became the first Frenchman to reach the Paris Masters final in 13 years. "I came as a kid to watch matches here and it made me want to do what I do, so I'm very happy to have reached the final," Humbert shared after the match.
Though Humbert opened with a strong hold of serve, highlighted by a sharp forehand passing shot, Zverev broke his opponent's serve twice in the first set, eventually taking it with only four unforced errors compared to Humbert's 17. A double fault from Humbert at the beginning of the second set enabled Zverev to establish an early lead, which he maintained with powerful serves and consistent groundstrokes.
Zverev's victory brought his season total to 66 wins, surpassing current world number one Jannik Sinner. He will now prepare for the ATP Finals in Turin from November 10-17, where he aims for a third season-ending title.
In the doubles final, sixth seeds Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic triumphed over Briton Lloyd Glasspool and Czech Adam Pavlasek. Koolhof and Mektic came back to win 3-6, 6-3, 10-5, claiming their fifth title of the season and halting the first-time tournament partnership of Glasspool and Pavlasek.
