Sinner Reaches US Open Final by Defeating Draper

In a humid U.S. Open semifinal on Friday, Jannik Sinner and Jack Draper both received medical attention. Sinner, who injured his left wrist during a point, and Draper, who vomited twice, were treated by trainers as the match progressed. Sinner, ranked No. 1 and from Italy, defeated Draper 7-5, 7-6 (3), 6-2, securing a spot in his first U.S. Open final and his second Grand Slam final this year.

Sinner, who had recently been cleared of a doping violation, played consistently well throughout the match. "It was a very physical match, as we see," Sinner remarked, noting the injury to his wrist.

The match was marked by an unusual scene when Draper, who tried to clean up after vomiting, was attended to during a changeover. This incident recalled a similar situation involving Pete Sampras in the 1996 U.S. Open. On a day with temperatures in the high 70s and humidity above 60%, the match extended beyond three hours.

Sinner, who won the Australian Open in January, will face either No. 12 Taylor Fritz or No. 20 Frances Tiafoe in the final. "Whoever it is," Sinner said, "it's going to be a very tough challenge for me. But I'm just looking forward to it."

Last month, it was revealed that Sinner had failed two drug tests in March but was cleared due to trace amounts of an anabolic steroid being unintentionally introduced through a team member's massage.

In the other men's semifinal, Fritz and Tiafoe were set to compete, with the winner becoming the first U.S. man to reach a Slam final since Andy Roddick in 2009. The last U.S. major winner was Roddick at the 2003 U.S. Open.

The women's final will feature an American as well, with No. 6 Jessica Pegula facing No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus.

During the match, Sinner's endurance proved crucial. He won 50 of 80 points that lasted nine or more strokes, outlasting Draper, who struggled with his physical condition and the demanding weather. Draper, despite his talent, faced challenges with his body, and Sinner's relentless play ultimately led to his victory. Sinner's record on hard courts this year improved to 34-2.
