Sinner Advances to US Open Third Round

World number one Jannik Sinner secured his place in the third round of the US Open with a commanding straight-sets victory over Alex Michelsen. The Italian defeated the American 6-4, 6-0, 6-2, marking his 50th win of the year.

This US Open marks Sinner's first tournament since it was revealed that he had been cleared of any wrongdoing following two positive tests for a banned substance earlier this year. The 23-year-old will next face Australian Chris O'Connell in the third round.

In the first round, Sinner had struggled against American Mackenzie McDonald, dropping the first set before coming back to win 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2. However, in his second-round match against Michelsen, Sinner showed no signs of difficulty. After a competitive first set, Sinner took control and completed the match in one hour and 39 minutes.

"I'm very happy," Sinner said. "He's a very tough opponent. We played each other in Cincinnati a week ago. I knew what to expect, he knew what to expect a little."

In other matches, seventh seed Hubert Hurkacz was eliminated by Australian Jordan Thompson in a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, 7-5 upset. This marks the sixth consecutive year that Hurkacz has been ousted in the second round of the US Open.

Sixteenth seed Seb Korda also fell, losing 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 to Czech Tomas Machac, who will face Belgium's David Goffin in the next round. French 24th seed Arthur Fils was defeated 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-4 by Gabriel Diallo of Canada, ranked 143rd in the world.

In contrast, Australian 10th seed Alex de Minaur progressed with a 7-5, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Finland's Otto Virtanen and will play either Britain's Dan Evans or Argentina's Mariano Navone in the third round.

American 14th seed Tommy Paul advanced after his opponent Max Purcell retired in the third set, with Paul leading 7-5, 6-0, 1-0.
