Carlos Alcaraz Extends Grand Slam Winning Streak to 15
Carlos Alcaraz extended his winning streak to 15 consecutive Grand Slam matches with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Li Tu on Tuesday night in the first round of the U.S. Open.
The No. 3 seed from Spain, who previously won the French Open and Wimbledon this year, now holds four major championships. Should Alcaraz secure another U.S. Open title in addition to his 2022 victory, he would join Rod Laver (1969) and Rafael Nadal (2010) as the only men to win three Grand Slam titles in a single year during the Open era.
Alcaraz has played only one match since his defeat to Novak Djokovic in the Paris Olympics final and had to shorten a practice session before the U.S. Open due to concerns following ankle surgery.
Despite these issues, Alcaraz showed strong performance in the final two sets against the Australian qualifier and will compete against Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round on Thursday.
