Evans Outlasts Khachanov in Longest US Open Match Since Tiebreakers Introduced

Dan Evans won the longest match at the U.S. Open since the introduction of tiebreakers in 1970, defeating Karen Khachanov 6-7 (6), 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4 in a match that lasted 5 hours and 35 minutes.
Evans was down 4-0 in the fifth set but came back to win the final six games. The concluding point of the match featured a 22-shot rally, with Evans eventually hitting a decisive shot to the corner that Khachanov, the No. 23 seed, could not return with his backhand.
The previous record for the longest match was 5 hours and 26 minutes, set by Stefan Edberg against Michael Chang in the 1992 semifinals.
With this victory, Evans, who now holds a 5-0 record against Khachanov, advanced to the second round. The sets lasted 68, 67, 72, 67, and 61 minutes respectively. Evans, who also played doubles with Andy Murray during the three-time Grand Slam champion's final tournament at the Olympics, finished the match with a total points edge of 201-191. He will face Mariano Navone of Argentina in the next round.
