Nuno Borges Defeats Rafael Nadal to Win Swedish Open
Nuno Borges, currently ranked 51st in the world, claimed victory over Rafael Nadal in the final of the Swedish Open in Bastad with a score of 6-3 6-2.
This defeat marks Nadal's first final loss since 2022. The 38-year-old Spaniard, who has 22 Grand Slam titles, has struggled with injuries in recent years and is now ranked 261. He chose not to compete at Wimbledon this year, focusing instead on the upcoming Olympics.
Borges, in his first ATP final, took the first set in 46 minutes and secured the second set by winning three consecutive games.
"It's crazy. I know we all wanted Rafa to win - a part of me wished that too - but something even bigger inside of me really pushed through today," said Borges, who is 27 years old.
"I was wishing for this moment for a while already. I'm just really happy overall. I really don't know what to say. I'm very emotional."
The Olympic tennis tournament is scheduled to start in Paris on July 27.
Nadal has expressed that his primary goal for this year is to compete at Roland Garros, where he has won 14 French Open titles.
