Djokovic Falls in Geneva Semifinals, Heads to French Open Without 2024 Title
Novak Djokovic will enter the French Open without a trophy for the 2024 season after losing in the semifinals of the Geneva Open on Friday.
The world No. 44, Tomas Machac, defeated Djokovic 6-4, 0-6, 6-1 in the final clay-court event before Roland Garros, where the main draw begins on Sunday.
“Of course I am worried. I haven't been playing good at all this year,” Djokovic said.
With this loss, Djokovic's record for 2024 stands at 14-6 overall and 0-3 in semifinals, including a defeat at the Australian Open against Jannik Sinner.
“I don't consider myself a favorite there,” the top-ranked Serbian player said regarding his chances at Roland Garros, where he has won two of the past three titles and three overall among his men's record 24 Grand Slam singles titles. “I'm going to take it match by match and see how far I can go.”
Machac secured victory on his first match-point opportunity, which came on Djokovic's serve, as Djokovic pushed a backhand long.
Djokovic faced five service breaks and made 27 unforced errors during the match.
“If you play against Novak you just hope and try to play your best and see how it looks,” Machac commented in an on-court interview.
Djokovic greeted the Czech player warmly at the net and smiled while walking off the court, applauding the fans.
Djokovic took a medical timeout after the first set due to a stomach issue.
“It was a terrible feeling with stomach and health today. It was not a great night and today as well,” he said. “I don't want to take anything away from his win, he deserved it.”
Machac will compete in his first tour final on Saturday against either two-time Geneva champion Casper Ruud, who has been the French Open runner-up for the past two years, or the unseeded Flavio Cobolli. Their semifinal match was delayed due to a lengthy rain delay.
