Malkin Expresses Commitment to Penguins Despite Rumors of Roster Overhaul
Evgeni Malkin, the star forward for the Pittsburgh Penguins, reaffirmed his desire to remain with the team despite ongoing speculation surrounding the franchise's plans for a potential roster overhaul.
Following a tough 4-3 overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday, Malkin made it clear that he has no intention of leaving Pittsburgh. "It's my second home here," Malkin told reporters. "I'm glad to be here. It doesn't matter if we win or we lost, I want to be here always together with (teammates) Sid (Crosby), with Tanger (Kris Letang). We understand it's a tough time right now. We traded Lars (Eller) yesterday. I want to stay together ... We will fight every game, you know?"
The Penguins made a move earlier this week, trading Lars Eller to the Washington Capitals in exchange for a pair of draft picks. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman has reported that the team is open to making further changes, as the Penguins currently sit at sixth in the Metropolitan Division with a 6-9-3 record. Their recent performance has been concerning, with only two wins in their last 10 games.
Pittsburgh's goal differential stands at a league-worst minus-22, a reflection of the team's struggles this season. With a playoff spot looking uncertain, the Penguins are on track to miss the postseason for the third consecutive year after a streak of 16 straight playoff appearances.
Despite the challenges, Malkin, along with longtime teammates Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang, remains a central figure for the Penguins. All three players are under contract for at least another season, each holding a full no-move clause. The team's decision to extend Crosby in September with a two-year, $17.4 million deal signaled their intention to remain competitive in the near future.
Malkin, who leads the Penguins with 18 points in 18 games this season, has expressed his commitment to the team as they work through their struggles.
