Cale Makar’s Status for Thursday’s Game vs. Jets Uncertain After Injury Scare
Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar could be available for Thursday's matchup against the Winnipeg Jets despite leaving Tuesday's victory over the Seattle Kraken with an undisclosed injury. Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar told Corey Masisak of The Denver Post on Wednesday that Makar has avoided a serious issue, and his status for the game remains up in the air.
Makar sustained the injury during the second period of Tuesday's 5-1 win. The 26-year-old appeared to be in discomfort while the team was on the power play and briefly left the ice. He did return for the third period but played only 29 seconds in the final 30 minutes before leaving the game entirely.
Before the injury, Makar extended his point streak to 13 games, contributing two assists in the contest. The defenseman now has 23 points on the season.
With Makar out, Nathan MacKinnon took charge, tallying five assists in the win, a career-high for the forward. MacKinnon has also extended his point streak to 13 games, joining Makar as the third set of teammates in NHL history to accomplish such a feat. Previous instances include Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito (15 games in 1973-74) and Dmitri Kvartalnov and Joe Juneau (14 games in 1992-93), as per NHL PR.
The Avalanche are currently 6-7-0 on the season, sitting sixth in the Central Division with a .462 points percentage. The team has faced significant injury woes, with Artturi Lehkonen, Ross Colton, Jonathan Drouin, Miles Wood, and Devon Toews all missing time this year.
