Fleury Says Goodbye to Pittsburgh: "Some of the Best Years of My Life"
Marc-Andre Fleury bid farewell to Penguins fans on Tuesday, likely marking his final appearance in Pittsburgh. The 39-year-old goaltender for the Minnesota Wild, who plans to retire at the end of the season, saved 26 of 29 shots in a 5-3 victory over his former team.
After the game, fans at PPG Paints Arena remained to honor the veteran goalie with chants of "Fleury! Fleury!" as he was named the game's first star. In a gesture of appreciation, Fleury gave his stick to a fan wearing a Penguins jersey.
Fleury's former teammates, Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang, also took time to congratulate him after the game. During his postgame interview, he expressed his gratitude to the fans, saying, "I feel very fortunate. Thank you, guys. Those were some of the best years of my life, I really appreciate it. It's so hard to say bye, but thank you so much."
A video tribute aired on the jumbotron during the first TV timeout, showcasing some of Fleury's notable practical jokes from his career, earning him a standing ovation from the crowd.
Fleury, drafted first overall by the Penguins in 2003, had a remarkable 13-season tenure with the team, during which he won three Stanley Cups. He holds several franchise records, including most games played by a goalie (691), most wins (375), best goals-against average (2.58), and most shutouts (44).
