Sharks Coach Warsofsky Calls Winless Start "Truly Embarrassing"
San Jose Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky expressed his disappointment after the team became the first in NHL history to start consecutive seasons with nine straight losses. Following a 7-3 defeat against the Vegas Golden Knights, the Sharks now hold a record of 0-7-2 this season, adding to last year's 0-10-1 start, which ultimately placed them at the bottom of the NHL standings.
Warsofsky, who was appointed head coach in the offseason, pointed to the team's struggles, stating, "It's embarrassing. Truly embarrassing," as reported by San Jose Hockey Now's Sheng Peng. The Sharks aimed to revitalize their roster by drafting Macklin Celebrini first overall, but he has missed the last eight games due to a hip injury.
Warsofsky acknowledged the emotions within the team, saying, "I don't think anyone's happy by any means. There's a lot of emotion in that locker room, frustration, anger, it's tough right now."
Currently, the Sharks rank last in both goals scored and goals allowed this season and are giving up an average of 33.9 shots per game, the fourth-highest in the league.
Veteran defenseman Mario Ferraro expressed optimism about the team's upcoming game in Salt Lake City, stating, "Tomorrow is a new day. We're going to get back at it. We're going to find ways to improve, and we're going to get our first win in Utah."
As the only winless team in the league, the Sharks risk extending their playoff drought to six years unless significant improvements are made soon.
