Shea Theodore Secures Seven-Year Extension with Vegas Golden Knightsillustration

The Vegas Golden Knights have announced a seven-year for defenseman Shea Theodore, with an average annual value of $7.425 million. This deal comes as Theodore was approaching unrestricted free agency and would have been a leading player at his position in the 2025 UFA class.

Theodore is currently in the final of a seven-year contract he signed with the Golden Knights in September 2018, which has a cap hit of $5.2 million, according to PuckPedia.

At 29 years old, Theodore serves as a top-pairing defenseman for the Golden Knights. He has recorded at least 40 points in each of the last five seasons, with a total of 37 points during the 2018-19 season. In the 2023-24 season, he achieved 42 points in just 47 games, missing nearly half the season due to injury.

So far this season, Theodore has one goal and six assists in six games. However, his underlying statistics indicate challenges, with a 41.39 expected goals for percentage and a 47.67 scoring chances for percentage, as reported by Natural Stat Trick.

Theodore has spent his entire career with the Golden Knights since they selected him during the expansion draft in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks, who were looking to protect players Josh Manson and Sami Vatanen.

With this extension, the Golden Knights solidify their defensive lineup, which also includes Noah Hanifin and Alex Pietrangelo. Hanifin's cap hit is $7.35 million through the 2031-32 season, while Pietrangelo carries an $8.8 million cap hit until 2026-27.

The Anaheim Ducks originally selected Theodore 26th overall in the 2013 NHL Draft.
