Saints' Olave Considers Guardian Cap After Concussion Setback
New Orleans Saints wide receiver Chris Olave is deliberating the use of a Guardian Cap—a helmet accessory designed to reduce head injury risk—following his concussion in Week 6.
"I'm still considering it. I was considering last game, ended up going with the regular helmet," Olave said in an interview with ESPN's Katherine Terrell.
The Guardian Cap, used by players like De'Von Achane and James Daniel, is designed to mitigate impact during play. While most players are required to wear it during practices, game-day use remains optional.
Olave's history with concussions stretches back to his rookie season, when he was placed in the league's concussion protocol after an injury in Week 5, resulting in his absence for one game. He also missed a matchup against the Atlanta Falcons that season due to concussion issues.
His most recent concussion occurred during a catch against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 6, leading to an evaluation by team doctors and his early exit from the game. In Week 8, Olave opted for a new helmet rather than the Guardian Cap, despite his consideration.
"I was good, man," he remarked after a hit in a game against the Los Angeles Chargers. "I know every big hit they kind of check for concussions and stuff, especially with my history. I was good when I got up, though, so I knew I was going to be able to go back in." Olave finished that Chargers game with eight catches and 107 receiving yards.
As Olave leads the Saints' receiving corps with 387 yards, 31 catches, and one touchdown this season, quarterback Derek Carr is expected to return against the Carolina Panthers following his own recent absence due to an oblique injury.
