Bryce Young to Start Again for Panthers Against Saints
Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales announced Bryce Young will start at quarterback for the second week in a row as the team prepares to face the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. Young's selection as the starter comes as veteran Andy Dalton continues to recover from a right thumb injury sustained in a recent car accident. Dalton participated in his first practice on Wednesday following the incident, which kept him out of last week's game against the Denver Broncos.
"For me, he's a week removed from a thumb injury and I just wanted to make sure that we're putting him back out there in the right state, in the right framework. And I'm excited for Bryce to have another opportunity to build on the things that we've talked about," Canales commented.
Young, the 2023 first overall draft pick, returned to the starting role last week after being benched following Week 2. He completed 64% of his passes, totaling 224 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions—his most notable performance statistically this season.
Dalton, who started five games for the Panthers this season, led the team to a victory over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 3 but followed up with four consecutive losses. With Young as the starter in Week 8, the Panthers were unable to break their losing streak. Dalton, a three-time Pro Bowler, has recorded 989 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and six interceptions with a 66% completion rate in the 2023 season.
