Tua Tagovailoa Returns to Starting Role Against Cardinals Following Concussion Protocol
Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel confirmed that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will return to the starting lineup on Sunday for the game against the Arizona Cardinals. This announcement comes after Tagovailoa cleared the NFL's concussion protocol following a head injury sustained in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills, which led him to miss four games.
Tagovailoa underwent an evaluation with an independent neurological consultant after Thursday's practice, resulting in his clearance to return to play. Throughout his recovery, he consulted with various medical experts nationwide, and all advised against retirement from football, despite his history of three concussions over the past two years.
Before deciding to continue his career, Tagovailoa discussed his situation with specialists and his family. He expressed his commitment to the sport, stating, "I love this game," as reported by The Athletic's Tashan Reed and Amos Morale III.
During Tagovailoa's absence, the Dolphins struggled with a 1-3 record. Skylar Thompson initially started in Week 3 but suffered a rib injury, leading to Tyler Huntley taking over in Week 4 after joining the team. Huntley played three games before being placed on injured reserve due to a right shoulder injury.
So far this season, Tagovailoa has thrown for 483 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions, with a completion rate of 64.5%. Last year, he led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards and 29 touchdowns, earning his first Pro Bowl selection.
