Bryce Young to Start for Panthers After Dalton's Car Accident

Bryce Young is set to start for the Carolina Panthers this Sunday against the Denver Broncos following a car accident involving Andy Dalton, who sustained a sprained thumb. Head coach Dave Canales confirmed the news, as reported by The Associated Press' Steve Reed.

Dalton, who did not participate in Wednesday's practice, reportedly "feels good, other than his thumb," according to team reporter Darin Gantt. The accident occurred near Charlotte on Tuesday, and none of Dalton's family members required hospitalization.

The Panthers will assess Dalton's status as a potential backup for Young as they prepare for the game. Dalton, a three-time Pro Bowler, has started five games this season, achieving a record of 1-4. He has accumulated 989 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and six interceptions. Carolina's only win this season came in Week 3 with Dalton as the starting quarterback.

Young returns to the starting lineup after being benched following Week 2. He has made brief appearances since his demotion earlier this season. "I'm fired up for him to have another opportunity and just get in there and play some football," Canales stated.

As the 2023 first overall pick, Young has thrown for 299 yards, with no touchdowns and three interceptions in his second professional season. The Panthers hold a 2-16 record with Young as their starter since last season. In his rookie campaign in 2023, he recorded 11 touchdowns against 10 interceptions, completing 59% of his pass attempts.
