USF Basketball Coach Amir Abdur-Rahim Passes Away at 43
Amir Abdur-Rahim, head coach of the University of South Florida men's basketball team, passed away on Thursday at the age of 43. According to the university's statement, Abdur-Rahim died due to complications during a medical procedure at a hospital in the Tampa area.
"All of us with South Florida athletics are grieving with the loved ones of coach Abdur-Rahim," said Michael Kelly, USF's vice president for athletics. "He was authentic, driven, and his infectious personality captivated all of Bulls Nation. Coach Abdur-Rahim leaves a lasting impact on our student-athletes, the university, and the community. We are supporting those closest to him, including his family, team, and athletics staff, to ensure they have the resources they need to deal with this tremendous loss."
Abdur-Rahim had just completed his first season with the Bulls, where he led the team to 25 wins and secured the university's first-ever appearance in the Associated Press rankings. His efforts earned him the American Athletic Conference's Coach of the Year honor.
Prior to his time at South Florida, Abdur-Rahim coached for four seasons at Kennesaw State, guiding the team to their first-ever March Madness appearance in 2023. His coaching career also included assistant roles at Murray State, Charleston, Texas A&M, and Georgia.
Amir Abdur-Rahim was the younger brother of former NBA player Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who had a 13-year career in the league.
