Rockets Reward Sengun with 5-Year, $185M Extension
The Houston Rockets have agreed to a five-year, $185 million rookie-scale extension with center Alperen Sengun, as reported by ESPN's Bobby Marks. The contract includes a player option for the final year, making Sengun the first player since Luka Doncic and Trae Young to sign a five-year rookie extension with such an option.
The 22-year-old Sengun is set to earn approximately $34 million in the 2025-26 season, with his salary increasing each year, according to The Athletic's Kelly Iko.
During his breakout third season, Sengun averaged 21.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, five assists, and 1.2 steals per game. He ranked third in the Most Improved Player voting, trailing only runner-up Coby White and winner Tyrese Maxey. Sengun's season was cut short as he missed the last 18 games due to a sprained ankle and a bone bruise in his knee.
Sengun was among six players who averaged at least 21 points, nine rebounds, and five assists last season, joining elite company that includes Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Joel Embiid, and Julius Randle.
The Rockets saw a significant improvement last season, finishing with a 41-41 record after increasing their win total by 19 games, although they missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.
Acquired with the 16th pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Sengun had a notable year in Turkey with Besiktas, where he was named MVP of the Basketball Super League at just 18 years old. Earlier on the same day, the Rockets also signed Jalen Green, the No. 2 pick from the 2021 draft, to a three-year, $106 million contract extension.
