Golden State Warriors Front-runners in Pursuit of Lauri Markkanen
The Golden State Warriors are actively pursuing Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen, according to sources familiar with the situation. Reported by The Athletic's Shams Charania, the Warriors have proposed a trade centered around Moses Moody, multiple first-round picks, pick swaps, and second-round picks for Markkanen. However, the Jazz have countered with a package involving several of Golden State's prospects and draft assets, including Brandin Podziemski and Jonathan Kuminga, a deal the Warriors have been hesitant to accept thus far.
Alongside the Warriors, other interested teams reportedly include the San Antonio Spurs, Sacramento Kings, and Miami Heat in acquiring the 27-year-old forward, who has one year remaining on his $18 million contract and is set to become a free agent after the upcoming season. Markkanen, a former NBA Most Improved Player, holds career averages of 18.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.5 assists.
The Jazz have the option to renegotiate and extend Markkanen's contract, potentially increasing his salary for the upcoming season by August 6. This trade pursuit comes as the Warriors undergo a transition phase, having recently agreed to trade Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks in a multi-team deal. In return, Golden State acquired Buddy Hield and Kyle Anderson, while also signing De'Anthony Melton to a one-year contract.
Despite finishing last season with a 46-36 record, the Warriors were eliminated from the play-in tournament by the Sacramento Kings.
