Jayson Tatum Finalizes NBA-Record $314M Extension with Celtics
Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum has completed an NBA-record five-year, $314 million supermax extension on Monday, ensuring his tenure with the team through the 2029-2030 season, sources confirmed to The Athletic's Shams Charania.
According to sources, the deal includes a player option for Tatum's final season and a trade kicker, as reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Tatum's decision to remain in Boston comes shortly after the Celtics clinched their 18th NBA title by defeating the Dallas Mavericks in five games. During their championship campaign, Tatum led the Celtics with averages of 25 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game.
Jaylen Brown, named the 2024 NBA Finals MVP, holds the league's second-highest contract after signing a $304 million deal last offseason. This makes the Celtics the sole team in the NBA with two supermax contracts.
Since being selected third overall by the Celtics in the 2017 NBA Draft, Tatum has spent his entire seven-year career with the franchise. The five-time All-Star boasts career averages of 23.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game.
Boston's general manager Brad Stevens has secured long-term deals for other key players in their championship-winning core: Jrue Holiday signed a four-year, $135 million extension in April, Payton Pritchard agreed to a four-year, $30 million deal last October, and Kristaps Porzingis is under contract until the 2025-26 season.
Additionally, All-Defensive guard Derrick White also finalized a lucrative four-year, $125.9 million extension with the Celtics on Monday.
