Lakers Leaning Towards JJ Redick for Head Coaching Position
According to sources familiar with the matter, JJ Redick, a former NBA player currently serving as an ESPN color commentator, appears to be the primary candidate for the Los Angeles Lakers' head coaching role. Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that the Lakers are in the final stages of their decision-making process and are also giving serious consideration to James Borrego, the associate head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans.
Redick was the first contender to engage with the Lakers, meeting with the organization in early May. The Lakers subsequently held a second meeting with Borrego last week.
In their pursuit of the ideal candidate, the Lakers have interviewed several assistant coaches, including Sam Cassell from the Boston Celtics, Chris Quinn from the Miami Heat, Micah Nori from the Minnesota Timberwolves, and David Adelman from the Denver Nuggets.
There is reportedly a belief within the Lakers' organization that Redick possesses coaching potential reminiscent of legendary figure Pat Riley.
Redick's connection with the Lakers extends beyond his potential coaching role; he co-hosts the "Mind The Game" podcast with Lakers' star LeBron James and runs the popular "The Old Man and the Three" podcast. Rich Paul, agent of LeBron James, emphasized in May that Redick's candidacy is not merely an effort to appease the league's top scorer.
The Lakers parted ways with former head coach Darvin Ham in May. Ham concluded his tenure with a record of 90 wins and 74 losses over two seasons, along with a playoff record of 9 wins and 12 losses.
