Red Sox in Contention for Garrett Crochet Trade, Source Reveals

The Boston Red Sox are heavily involved in trade talks with the Chicago White Sox regarding left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet, according to a source speaking with MassLive's Sean McAdam.

In addition to the Red Sox, the Baltimore Orioles, San Diego Padres, and Los Angeles Dodgers are also expected to pursue the 25-year-old pitcher. The source noted that, from a talent perspective, “(the Red Sox) match up well” in the discussions, but the final outcome will depend on the offers made.

Crochet enjoyed a standout 2024 season after transitioning from a reliever to a starting pitcher. He posted a career-high 146 innings, striking out 209 batters and recording a 3.58 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP.

At just 25 years old, Crochet presents a more affordable pitching option for teams in need of arms, especially when compared to older free agents like Corbin Burnes, Blake Snell, or Max Fried, all of whom are over 30 and may command nine-figure contracts. Red Sox owner John Henry has historically avoided such costly signings.

Boston possesses the prospect depth to facilitate a trade for Crochet. The team boasts six players on MLB Pipeline's Top 100 list, with three of them ranked in the top ten. While third-ranked prospect Roman Anthony is likely untouchable, the Red Sox could offer a controllable major-league player like Wilyer Abreu as part of a package deal.

Crochet is projected to earn $2.9 million in 2025 following salary arbitration and is under team control through the 2026 season. However, his future value may rise, as he previously stirred controversy with a comment stating he would not pitch in the postseason without a contract extension if traded to a contender at the 2024 trade deadline.

Over his four MLB seasons, Crochet has posted a 3.29 ERA, good for a 128 ERA+.
