Braves Send Soler to Angels, Acquire Canning in Trade Deal
The Atlanta Braves traded outfielder Jorge Soler to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for right-handed pitcher Griffin Canning, according to an announcement from both teams on Thursday.
Soler, who turned 32 this season, joined the Braves midseason after being acquired from the San Francisco Giants just before the trade deadline. In 2024, he posted a .241/.338/.442 batting line, hitting 21 home runs and driving in 64 RBIs across 142 games split between Atlanta and San Francisco.
"This is move No. 1," Angels general manager Perry Minasian told The Athletic's Sam Blum. "We expect there to be more moves." Minasian added that further financial details about the club's approach would depend on a "case-by-case" basis.
The trade allows Atlanta to clear Soler's contract from its payroll, which MLB.com's Mark Bowman reports would have cost the Braves $26 million over the next two years.
Canning, 28, concluded the 2024 season with a 5.19 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP over 171 2/3 innings. The right-hander remains under team control through the 2025 season, making him a potential addition to the Braves' pitching depth moving forward.
