Dodgers' Roberts Stands by Decision to Rest Key Relievers in World Series Game 4
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed no regrets about resting his high-leverage relievers during the team's 11-4 loss to the New York Yankees in World Series Game 4. Key pitchers Brusdar Graterol, Alex Vesia, and Michael Kopech did not see action on Tuesday night after contributing to the Dodgers' 4-2 victory in Game 3.
Blake Treinen also remained inactive after pitching in Games 1 and 2. "It's challenging," Roberts stated postgame. "I think you've got to be certain that you can score some runs. Certainly, any guy we (used) tonight would have not been able to pitch tomorrow."
The Yankees took control of the game after a record-setting home run by Freddie Freeman, which gave the Dodgers a 2-0 lead in the first inning. However, New York led 6-4 going into the eighth inning before scoring five more runs to secure the victory.
Roberts emphasized the importance of having a well-rested bullpen, saying, "We knew it was a bullpen game. As far as outcomes - to have six guys in your pen that are feeling good, rested, I feel good about that. And being up 3-1."
Looking ahead, the Yankees will start ace Gerrit Cole in Game 5, while the Dodgers will counter with Jack Flaherty and their rested group of relievers. The Dodgers are one win away from their second championship since 2020, while the Yankees aim to become the first team in MLB history to overcome a 3-0 deficit in the World Series.
Game 5 is scheduled to start at 8:08 p.m. ET in the Bronx.
