Guardiola Extends Man City Tenure with One-Year Deal
Pep Guardiola has agreed to a one-year contract extension with Manchester City, securing his stay at the club for an additional season. The confirmation came after reports in *The Athletic*, with multiple sources affirming the move. Guardiola, 53, initially joined City in 2016, and his new deal will extend his tenure to a decade with the club.
The Spaniard has enjoyed significant success at City, having led them to 18 trophies, including six Premier League titles. His previous contract was set to expire at the end of this season, and while there have been speculations about a second-year option in the new agreement, details remain unclear.
Guardiola has been pivotal in City's success, guiding them to a historic Treble – winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League in the same season – becoming just the second English men's team to do so. Under his management, City also became the first men's team to win four consecutive English top-flight titles and reached the milestone of 100 Premier League points in a single season.
Currently, Manchester City sits second in the Premier League, trailing leaders Liverpool by five points. However, the team is on a challenging run, having suffered four consecutive defeats across all competitions – the first such streak in Guardiola's managerial career, excluding penalty shootouts. Following their 2-1 defeat at Brighton, Guardiola commented, "Maybe after seven years winning six Premier Leagues, maybe one year another team deserve it."
Guardiola had previously signed extensions in May 2018, November 2020, and November 2022. In May, after securing his fourth consecutive league title with City, he mentioned that he was "closer to leaving than staying." His decision was further influenced by the announcement in October that Txiki Begiristain, the club's director of football and a long-time collaborator, would depart at the end of the season. Guardiola emphasized that he needed to be “really convinced” that any extension would be in the club's best interests.
The uncertainty surrounding Guardiola's future has been suggested as a factor contributing to the team's recent struggles. In addition, Manchester City is facing a disciplinary investigation by the Premier League over 115 charges, which the club denies. Guardiola has consistently defended the club, urging critics to wait for the final verdict before passing judgment.
As the longest-serving manager in the Premier League following Jurgen Klopp's departure from Liverpool, Guardiola's decision ensures his continued leadership at Manchester City for at least one more season.
