Fernandes Signs New Manchester United Contract Until June 2027

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has signed a new contract that extends his stay at Old Trafford until June 2027, with an option for an additional year. Fernandes, a Portugal midfielder, joined Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 for £47 million. Since then, he has made 234 appearances, scoring 79 goals and providing 67 assists.

Fernandes' previous contract, which he signed in 2022, was set to expire in 2026. He took over as Manchester United's captain from Harry Maguire in July 2023.

Fernandes stated, “Everybody knows the passion I have for Manchester United. I can see how positive the future is going to be and I am relishing leading this team forward.” He continued, “I understand the responsibility and significance of wearing this shirt, and the levels of dedication and desire required to represent this incredible club.”

Despite facing criticism from former United players Gary Neville and Roy Keane, manager Erik ten Hag has maintained his support for Fernandes. Fernandes mentioned he “wouldn't have signed this contract” if he did not believe his “best moments in a United shirt are still to come.”

Reflecting on his tenure, Fernandes recalled significant moments, including a hat-trick against Leeds and leading the team at Old Trafford during European matches. He added, “From my discussions with the football leadership and manager, it is clear how determined everyone is to fight for major trophies in the years ahead.”

Fernandes was not included among the ‘untouchables' for potential summer transfers, but a sale would have required an offer the club found irresistible, which did not emerge. Prior to the FA Cup final in May, Fernandes had expressed a desire for his expectations to align with those of the club.

Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth described Fernandes as a “brilliant leader,” praising his consistent performance and dedication.
