Atletico Madrid Stuns PSG with Last-Minute Goal, Drops French Side to 25th in UCL Standings
Atletico Madrid secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday, with substitute Angel Correa scoring the winning goal in injury time. The result pushed PSG to 25th place in the Group A standings, leaving their European hopes hanging by a thread.
The match, held at Parc des Princes, had looked set to end in a draw after PSG's Warren Zaire-Emery opened the scoring in the 14th minute, only for Atletico's Nahuel Molina to equalize four minutes later. Despite controlling much of the possession, with nearly 70% and 21 attempts on goal, PSG were unable to find a winner.
Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, appeared content to hold out for a draw but found their breakthrough in the final moments. Correa's goal in the 93rd minute came after a quick counterattack, sealing all three points for the Spanish side and giving them a much-needed boost after a series of setbacks in the competition.
PSG's recent struggles in the Champions League continued, as they have now only earned four points from four matches, including three home games. Their previous losses came against Benfica and Lille, while they managed a draw against PSV Eindhoven. Next up for PSG is a tough away trip to Bayern Munich, followed by a clash with Manchester City, making their path to qualification uncertain.
Despite missing two key defenders—Jose Maria Gimenez and Robin Le Normand—Atletico's defense held firm, with goalkeeper Jan Oblak making several critical saves, particularly in the second half. Oblak denied Bradley Barcola twice, as well as stopping a header from Marquinhos and a shot from Achraf Hakimi.
The match was also notable for a pre-match banner displayed by PSG fans in support of Palestinians in Gaza, which may attract attention from UEFA for potential disciplinary reasons.
With their chances of making the knockout stage now slim, PSG must regroup and improve their finishing, having scored just three goals in their last six Champions League matches, dating back to last season's semi-final loss to Borussia Dortmund.
