Bayern Munich Dominates Bochum to Reclaim Bundesliga Lead
Bayern Munich rebounded from their Champions League loss against Barcelona with a commanding 5-0 victory over Bochum on Sunday, reclaiming the top position in the Bundesliga.
RB Leipzig had temporarily taken the lead after their 3-1 comeback win against Freiburg on Saturday, but Bayern regained the summit on goal difference, with five different players finding the net.
"It's fun to score goals," Jamal Musiala stated to DAZN. "We can be happy today -- and take the rhythm and flow with us in the next few games."
Despite their impressive attacking display under new coach Vincent Kompany, Bayern entered the match with just one win from their last six competitive games. Musiala reflected on the team's recent struggles, saying, "It was hard to take and it hurt... we have to look ahead -- it's still early in the season."
Bochum nearly capitalized on a defensive lapse early in the game when Moritz Broschinski outpaced Min-jae Kim and reached the ball before Manuel Neuer, but his shot was too weak, allowing Kim to clear it off the line.
Bayern opened the scoring with a simple free kick by Olise, who curled the ball over the Bochum wall and past the out-of-position goalkeeper Patrick Drewes. Ten minutes later, Musiala scored with a header from a Joshua Kimmich free kick, doubling Bayern's lead.
The second half saw Bayern extend their advantage, with Harry Kane, Leroy Sane, and Kingsley Coman all scoring within a 14-minute span. Kane netted his ninth goal in eight league matches after a setup from Musiala, while Sane capitalized on a defensive mistake, and Coman scored with a powerful shot off the crossbar.
"Bayern simply showed their quality," remarked Bochum's Maximilian Wittek. As Bayern Munich takes the lead on goal difference, Bochum remains at the bottom of the table, having earned just one point from eight matches.
In another match, Union Berlin drew 1-1 with Eintracht Frankfurt in the German capital, rising to fourth place. Mario Gotze opened the scoring for Frankfurt, tapping in after Union failed to clear the ball from the box. Union equalized in the 66th minute with a counterattack led by Benedict Hollerbach, who chipped the ball over goalkeeper Kevin Trapp.
Frankfurt's hopes of victory were thwarted when Arthur Theate received a second yellow card for a foul, and Skarke's late goal for Union was disallowed by VAR for offside.
The final match of the round will see Heidenheim host Hoffenheim later on Sunday.
