Man City Draws with Inter Milan in UCL; PSG Claims Last-Minute Victory Over Girona
Manchester City were held to a 0-0 draw by Inter Milan in their opening Champions League match on Wednesday. This result marked a slow start for Pep Guardiola's side, despite their perfect record in the Premier League this season, where they have won all four games. The match was a rematch of the 2023 Champions League final, which City won.
Kevin De Bruyne left the field due to injury at half-time, and City struggled to capitalize on opportunities. Phil Foden had their best chance, but his shot was saved by Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer. Erling Haaland, who was pursuing his 100th goal for the club, remained largely ineffective.
City defender Ruben Dias acknowledged the challenge of facing Inter, telling TNT Sports, "It was a very intense game against a strong opponent. We knew what was coming, they are a top team as well and they are used to winning, so we were not going to have an easy job."
Inter's Henrikh Mkhitaryan had a chance to win the game but missed the target 15 minutes before the end. With the draw, Manchester City extended their unbeaten run in the Champions League to 24 matches, just one short of the record set by Manchester United between 2007 and 2009. The match also marked only the second time in 42 home Champions League fixtures under Guardiola that City failed to score.
Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu commented on their approach, saying, "Our plan was to show that we're not scared to play here."
In a separate Champions League fixture, Paris Saint-Germain narrowly defeated Girona, a tournament debutant, thanks to a last-minute goal. PSG appeared to be heading for a draw against Girona, a team backed by the City Football Group, but Nuno Mendes' cross slipped through the hands of Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga in the 90th minute, giving PSG the win.
"It was a difficult game, they're a team that plays well with the ball," Mendes told Canal Plus. "I was surprised (by the goal). The goalkeeper was there and it got through."
PSG secured the victory despite Girona's strong performance, adding an important three points to their campaign.
