Spurs Survive League Cup Scare with Last-Minute Comeback vs. Coventry
Tottenham Hotspur narrowly avoided a League Cup upset with a late 2-1 victory against second-tier Coventry on Wednesday. Spurs required two late goals from Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson to secure their place in the next round after a difficult match.
Coventry took the lead in the 63rd minute when Brandon Thomas-Asante scored, capitalizing on a well-placed cross from Norman Bassette. This put Tottenham on the brink of a third consecutive defeat, following a 1-0 loss to Arsenal in the north London derby last Sunday.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, who has a track record of winning silverware in his second season with multiple clubs, faced criticism from Spurs supporters during the match. The home crowd booed his decision to substitute Swedish youngster Lucas Bergvall early in the second half.
With time running out and a potential early exit looming, Tottenham equalized in the 87th minute. Dejan Kulusevski set up Djed Spence, who scored his first goal for Spurs. Then, in stoppage time, Rodrigo Bentancur assisted Brennan Johnson, who netted the decisive goal to secure a 2-1 win.
Elsewhere, Brighton & Hove Albion advanced to the last 16 with a 3-2 win over Wolves. Carlos Baleba, Simon Adingra, and Ferdi Kadioglu were on the scoresheet for Brighton.
