Arsenal have finalized the acquisition of Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino from in a deal potentially worth £31.6 million. The 28-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the option for an additional year. The transfer includes an initial fee of £27.4 million and up to £4.2 million in add-ons.

Manager Mikel Arteta commented, "Mikel is a player who will bring us huge quality with his experience and versatility." Merino was part of Spain's squad that won Euro , appearing in all seven matches and scoring a decisive goal in extra time against Germany during the quarter-final.

Merino is Arsenal's third signing of the transfer window, following Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori and Spain goalkeeper David Raya, who was permanently signed from Brentford after a previous loan.

Arteta noted, "Mikel will make our squad significantly stronger, with his technical ability, together with his strong and positive character and personality." He added, “As we all saw in the summer, Mikel is also a winner, with his strong performances throughout the Euros helping Spain win the tournament."

Merino, who has experience in the from his time at Newcastle, is expected to enhance Arsenal's midfield alongside Declan Rice, Jorginho, Thomas Partey, and Martin Odegaard. He made 45 appearances for Real Sociedad last season, scoring eight goals.
