Empoli stun Roma, Torino beat Atalanta as Serie A upsets continue
Empoli secured a historic victory against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday, marking their first-ever win away to the capital club. Despite high expectations following Paulo Dybala's decision to remain with Roma, Daniele De Rossi's side suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat in Serie A.
Empoli took the lead just before half-time with a close-range finish from Emmanuel Gyasi. Lorenzo Colombo doubled the visitors' advantage in the 61st minute with a penalty. Although Eldor Shomurodov reduced the deficit for Roma with a goal in the 80th minute, the home side was unable to complete a comeback.
Roma's frustration was evident as they struck the woodwork three times during the match, with Dybala, Lorenzo Pellegrini, and Gianluca Mancini all coming close to scoring. The disappointing result led to boos from the home crowd, frustrated by the team's performance against a side expected to be in the relegation battle.
De Rossi acknowledged the team's poor start, stating, "We were lacking energy and intensity... We played well in the second half but it wasn't enough, and if you don't play well in the first half things aren't going to go well for you." Roma will face Juventus in their next Serie A fixture.
In another Serie A match, Che Adams became the first Scottish player to score for Torino since Denis Law in the 1961/62 season, as his goal helped secure a 2-1 victory over Atalanta. Adams, who joined Torino as a free agent last month, netted his debut goal for the club four minutes after half-time, adding to Ivan Ilic's 31st-minute equalizer.
The win for Torino was sealed when Vanja Milinkovic-Savic saved Mario Pasalic's penalty in stoppage time. This result left Torino with four points from their first two matches of the season. The victory was particularly significant as it followed mass protests from Torino fans, who marched to the stadium demanding that owner Urbano Cairo sell the club after nearly two decades in charge.
