Manchester City Re-Signs Gundogan from Barcelona
Manchester City have secured the return of former captain Ilkay Gundogan from Barcelona on an initial one-year contract with an option for an additional 12 months.
Gundogan, who was Pep Guardiola's first signing at Manchester City in 2016, had a seven-year tenure at the club before moving to Barcelona on a free transfer in 2023.
The 33-year-old midfielder won 14 trophies during his first spell at Manchester City, netting 60 goals in 304 appearances.
Gundogan expressed his satisfaction with his time at Manchester City, stating, "My seven years at Manchester City were a time of pure contentment for me, both on and off the pitch." He further acknowledged his respect for Guardiola, saying, "Everyone knows the respect I have for Pep - he is the best manager in the world and working with him every day makes you a better player." Gundogan concluded with, "Honestly, I cannot wait to wear the City shirt again."
Although Gundogan had a successful debut season in Spain, Barcelona opted to part ways with him due to financial constraints, including issues registering new signing Dani Olmo. Gundogan's departure, which helps Barcelona adhere to La Liga's financial regulations, was influenced by his status as one of the club's highest earners.
On Instagram, Gundogan addressed his departure, stating, "I am leaving in a difficult situation, but if my departure can help the club financially, it makes me a bit less sad." He also expressed gratitude for his time at Barcelona, noting he was "looking forward to helping my team-mates in the new campaign."
Ahead of Manchester City's match against Ipswich Town, Guardiola remarked on Gundogan's return, describing it as a "complete surprise, unexpected." He added, "We didn't have any doubts when the possibility to re-sign him was open, and we're absolutely delighted that he's back."
Gundogan, who has earned 82 caps for Germany, retired from international football following Germany's quarter-final exit to Spain at Euro 2024.
