Julian Alvarez to Join Atletico Madrid in €95M Deal from Manchester City
Julian Alvarez is reportedly set to leave Manchester City for Atletico Madrid, with widespread reports indicating the deal is worth up to €95 million (£81 million, $104 million). The transfer will consist of €75 million upfront, along with an additional €20 million in bonuses, as confirmed by transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.
The 24-year-old forward joined City for just £14 million from River Plate in January 2022. Since then, he has made significant contributions to his teams, helping Argentina secure victories in the World Cup and Copa America, while also winning two Premier League titles and the Champions League at the club level.
After returning to River Plate on loan for six months, Alvarez scored 36 goals in two seasons with City, contributing to the club's historic achievement of winning four consecutive English top-flight titles. However, during his time in Manchester, he often played second fiddle to Erling Haaland.
With Alvarez's departure, Manchester City will set a club record for player sales. The club may now need to explore the transfer market in the last three weeks of the window to find a backup for the Norwegian striker.
Meanwhile, Alvarez is expected to take on a more prominent role in Madrid following the transfer of Spain captain Alvaro Morata to AC Milan. He will have the opportunity to work under compatriot Diego Simeone.
Atletico Madrid is bolstering its squad to compete with Real Madrid and Barcelona at the top of La Liga after finishing fourth last season. They have already signed Euro 2024 winner Robin Le Normand and Norwegian forward Alexander Sorloth. Additionally, Chelsea's Conor Gallagher is close to finalizing a £33 million move to Madrid, having traveled to the Spanish capital to complete the transfer.
