Conor Gallagher Set to Join Atletico Madrid for £33m
Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher has confirmed his decision to join Atletico Madrid. The Blues accepted a £33m offer from the Spanish club last week, but there were significant doubts about Gallagher's interest in the transfer.
On Sunday night, Gallagher, 24, informed Atletico officials that he is willing to make the move. The Chelsea academy graduate is expected to fly to Spain soon to complete his medical examination and sign his contract, marking the end of his 18-year association with Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea had proposed a two-year deal with an option for an additional year, but Gallagher found the offer unsatisfactory due to the contract's duration and his projected role in the squad.
A divide had formed between Gallagher and Chelsea as he was considered a poor fit for new manager Enzo Maresca's possession-based style of play, which would limit his opportunities to start under the Italian coach.
Gallagher, who appeared in five matches during Euro 2024, has less than a year remaining on his current contract with Chelsea. The club preferred to sell him to an overseas team rather than a domestic rival, allowing Atletico to secure a cut-price deal.
