PSG Sign Benfica Midfielder Neves in £50m Deal
Paris St-Germain have confirmed the signing of Benfica midfielder Joao Neves in a deal valued at an initial £50 million, which could escalate to £60 million with performance-related add-ons.
The 19-year-old Portugal international, who had also been linked to Manchester United, has committed to a five-year contract with the French champions.
Neves made his first-team breakthrough at Benfica in January last year, establishing himself as a pivotal player for his childhood club. He recorded 75 appearances in all competitions and scored four goals during his tenure.
Benfica announced that the transfer fee would start at £50 million, with the possibility of additional costs based on various performance metrics.
Neves arrives at PSG as the club adjusts following the summer exit of star forward Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid.
"Joao is one of the most talented players in Portugal and internationally," remarked PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi. "He was so passionate to join Paris St-Germain and determined to fight for the jersey—which is what we expect of all our players."
The midfielder has earned nine caps for Portugal and participated in two matches at this summer's European Championship in Germany, contributing to the team's progress to the quarter-finals.
"I'm very proud to be joining Paris St-Germain, a very ambitious club," Neves stated. "I'm going to give my all to help my team-mates, to grow at this fantastic club and to win numerous titles."
