Son Scores Twice as Spurs Edge Team K League in Friendly
Son Heung-min netted two goals as Tottenham Hotspur triumphed over a selection of top players from South Korea's K League, winning 4-3 in a friendly match.
Dejan Kulusevski opened the scoring in the 29th minute, and South Korea and Spurs captain Son marked his return to Seoul with a stunning goal in the 38th minute, curling an effort into the top corner. He then added a second goal just before half-time, finishing off a Kulusevski assist to give Spurs a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Team K League made a complete squad change, which sparked a comeback. Stanislav Iljutcenko struck twice within five minutes of the restart, narrowing the gap to 3-2.
Responding to the pressure, Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou made tactical changes. Substitute Will Lankshear restored a two-goal cushion for Spurs, volleying in a cross from Timo Werner.
Team K League's Oberdan pulled one back in the 81st minute, making it 4-3, but Spurs managed to hold on for the victory, despite James Maddison hitting the post during injury time.
Tottenham will return to pre-season action on Saturday, facing Bayern Munich at 12:00 BST in Seoul.
In other friendly action, Newcastle United secured a 4-1 victory against Urawa Red Diamonds in Japan. Alexander Isak opened the scoring in the third minute, but the hosts equalized in the 23rd minute with a backheel from Rio Nitta that bounced in off the post.
Newcastle regained the lead just before halftime through Jacob Murphy, who scored again two minutes after the break. A deflected long-range effort from Lewis Hall capped off the scoring for the Magpies.
Newcastle's next pre-season match is scheduled against Yokohama F. Marinos at 13:00 BST on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Southampton suffered a 2-0 defeat to Championship newcomers Oxford United at Kassam Stadium. Mark Harris and Ruben Rodrigues scored for Oxford, handing the Saints their first pre-season loss. Southampton will face Millwall on Saturday.
