Marseille Complete Signing of Forward Mason Greenwood from Manchester United

Marseille have completed the signing of forward Mason Greenwood from Manchester United on a contract running until 2029, with the deal valued at up to €31.6 million (£26.6 million).

Greenwood, 22, who came through United's academy, has not featured for the Premier League side since January 2022 and spent the previous season on loan at Getafe. Serious charges against him, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February 2023.

The decision to sign Greenwood has attracted criticism from Marseille's mayor following the club's announcement of the transfer.

Greenwood made his competitive debut for Manchester United in 2019 as a substitute against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. He netted 35 goals in 129 appearances and earned one England cap in 2020.

In August 2023, Manchester United confirmed Greenwood's departure by mutual agreement after a six-month internal review of his conduct. He joined Getafe in September 2023, where he scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 36 appearances, aiding his career revival.

United have included a significant sell-on clause in the transfer agreement with Marseille and wished Greenwood well on their website.

Marseille are scheduled to play a pre-season friendly against Sunderland on August 3 at Bradford City's Valley Parade, as the Stadium of Light is undergoing renovations. This match could mark Greenwood's first return to England since his arrest in January 2022 related to allegations surrounding material published online.
