Spain beat Georgia to set up Germany quarter-final

Spain secured a spot in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals against hosts Germany after overcoming an early setback to defeat Georgia.

In their maiden major tournament appearance, Georgia surprised the crowd at Cologne Stadium by taking the lead through an own goal by Spain's Robin le Normand in the 18th minute, following a swift counter-attack led by Otar Kakabadze's curling cross.

Despite Georgia's spirited start, Spain equalized when Rodri, of Manchester City, fired a low shot past goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. Spain continued to dominate, and 16-year-old Lamine Yamal's cross was headed in by Fabian Ruiz to take the lead.

Georgia's Khvicha Kvaratskhelia nearly scored a spectacular goal from the halfway line, narrowly missing the target. However, Spain's Nico Williams ensured victory with a powerful strike into the roof of the net, followed by Dani Olmo's precise finish.

Next, Spain will face Germany in Stuttgart on Friday, with midfielder Rodri expressing confidence: "Germany at home will be very strong but we have no fear."

Spain, with a flawless record in the group stages, showed resilience after Georgia's surprise goal. Coach Luis de la Fuente praised his team's performance, acknowledging Georgia's quality: "We created many chances, and it could have been 8-1 which would have been normal."

Georgia exits the tournament after a commendable run that included a memorable victory over Portugal. Manager Willy Sagnol reflected positively on Georgia's progress: "The evolution of the team has been absolutely fantastic."
