UEFA Bans Albania's Mirlind Daku for Two Euro 2024 Matches Over Nationalist Chants
Albania's Mirlind Daku has been handed a two-game ban by UEFA following incidents of nationalist chants during the European Championship. UEFA stated that these actions brought the sport into disrepute.
After Albania's 2-2 draw with Croatia in Hamburg, Daku used a megaphone to lead fans in chants against Serbia and North Macedonia, prompting UEFA's disciplinary action. This incident has underscored ongoing tensions and political sensitivities within Balkan football, despite recent efforts by soccer federations to foster reconciliation.
In addition to Daku's suspension, UEFA fined the Albanian soccer federation €47,250 ($50,500) for incidents during the match, where fans reportedly chanted anti-Serb slogans.
Daku, who switched his international allegiance from Kosovo to Albania in accordance with FIFA rules, later apologized for his actions on social media. UEFA has initiated further investigation into his conduct.
