PSG Wins French Cup and Double in Mbappé’s Farewell Game
Paris Saint-Germain clinched a 2-1 victory over Lyon in the French Cup final, securing a domestic double in Kylian Mbappé's final match for the club on Saturday.
PSG's goals came in the first half, with France winger Ousmane Dembélé and Spain midfielder Fabian Ruiz finding the net. Lyon defender Jake O'Brien scored a consolation goal in the second half.
This win marks PSG's first league and cup double since 2020, a year they also won the now-defunct League Cup.
Mbappé celebrated jubilantly after the final whistle, embracing his teammates and sharing joyous moments with the PSG staff, who lifted him into the air.
“You feel a bit more the weight of things because you realize that it's really over,” Mbappé told broadcaster beIN Sports. “When I said goodbye to the Parc des Princes, there were still some games left, so you are still focused on what awaits you. Now, I have nothing left with PSG. But I'm very happy to have been able to finish with a trophy.”
Despite the loss, Lyon qualified for the Europa League by finishing sixth in the league.
The scoring opened in the 22nd minute when Dembélé headed home a cross from Nuno Mendes. Ruiz added a second in the 34th minute by converting a rebound after his initial header was blocked by O'Brien.
Lyon's goalkeeper Lucas Perri made several key saves early on, denying Bradley Barcola and Warren Zaire-Emery, but misjudged the cross that led to Dembélé's goal.
O'Brien reduced the deficit to 2-1 in the 55th minute with a header from a corner. PSG, struggling with aerial threats this season, nearly conceded again in the 64th minute, but goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma tipped a header from Lyon's Nicolas Tagliafico over the bar.
“The players are disappointed but let's not forget that we must also be proud of what we have done,” Lyon coach Pierre Sage told beIN Sports.
Lyon had been at the bottom of the league in December but amassed more points than any other club in the second half of the season to finish sixth.
Mbappé made several attempts to score in his final PSG appearance, including a curling shot in the 20th minute and a volley over the bar in the 41st.
Over seven seasons with PSG, Mbappé has won 15 trophies, including four French Cups. He leaves as PSG's all-time top scorer with 256 goals in 308 appearances.
“I'm happy to have been part of its history and to have made it a bit,” Mbappé said.
The French Cup final was marred by violence, as Lyon and PSG supporters clashed on a highway leading to the venue a few hours before kickoff. Flares were thrown, windows on buses carrying supporters were smashed, and some buses were set on fire.
The match was held at Stade Pierre Mauroy in the north of France due to preparations for the Olympic Games, making Villeneuve d'Ascq the first city outside the Greater Paris area to host the French Cup final since the competition began in 1917.
