Southgate: Contract Talks Won't Distract Ahead of Euro 2024

Gareth Southgate, the manager of the England national football team, has emphasized that his contract situation is not a concern as he approaches the final six months of his deal before the European Championship in Germany.

Southgate, who took charge of the Three Lions in 2016, contemplated leaving his position following England's defeat to France in the World Cup quarter-finals in Qatar but opted to stay on.

The Football Association (FA) is eager for Southgate to continue as manager. He will be leading England in his fourth major tournament this summer, with the team aiming to secure their first trophy since the 1966 World Cup.

Speaking ahead of Euro 2024, Southgate dismissed any distractions regarding his contract, stating, "Well, for me, it's not an issue and never has been. I have to deliver a successful tournament for England, and there's enough work involved in that. I think everybody would expect that's where my focus should be."

Despite speculation linking him to the Manchester United managerial position amid pressure on their current manager, Erik ten Hag, Southgate remained focused on the upcoming European Championship. He emphasized the opportunity Euro 2024 presents and expressed his determination to guide England further than their previous Euros performance, where they were defeated in the final by Italy.

Regarding squad selection for Euro 2024, Southgate revealed that he would announce the initial squad on Tuesday, with UEFA allowing 26-man squads for the tournament. While England boasts strong attacking options, injuries in defense pose challenges, particularly at full-back positions. Southgate acknowledged the added depth in the squad might assist in overcoming these challenges but affirmed that he would carefully consider the squad size, ensuring no unnecessary players are included.

England is scheduled to play friendlies against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iceland before finalizing their squad on the 7th of June deadline.
