Williams Replaces Logan Sargeant with Franco Colapinto for Remainder of 2024 Season
Logan Sargeant's tenure with Williams has concluded.
The American driver has been dropped for the remainder of the 2024 Formula 1 season following a practice crash before the Dutch Grand Prix. Sargeant was unable to participate in qualifying due to his car being damaged beyond repair after the incident in FP3.
Franco Colapinto, a Formula 2 driver, will replace Sargeant for the rest of the season, beginning with the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday.
Sargeant, 23, earned only one point across 36 career races with Williams. He made his F1 debut in 2023, with his sole point being awarded at the United States Grand Prix in October. Although he finished 10th in that race, he initially crossed the line in 12th place. He was promoted in the standings after second-place finisher Lewis Hamilton and sixth-place finisher Charles Leclerc were disqualified for post-race inspection failures.
Sargeant ended the previous season in last place among drivers who participated in all 22 races. This season, his best result was 11th place at Silverstone. He missed the third race of the season when Alex Albon took over his car due to a practice crash before the Australian Grand Prix. Williams, lacking a spare chassis in Australia and with Albon being the team's lead driver, opted to bench Sargeant for that race.
Williams had already announced that Sargeant would not return in 2025, with Carlos Sainz set to join the team next season.
Following Sargeant's crash in the Netherlands, speculation about his immediate future with the team arose. Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson was mentioned as a potential replacement for Sargeant at Monza, but no agreement was reached.
Colapinto will be the first Argentine driver to compete in Formula 1 since 2001 when he takes to the track for Sunday's race.
