Alex Albon Extends Contract with Williams
Amidst ongoing speculation regarding his future, Formula One driver Alex Albon has inked a multi-year contract extension with Williams Racing.
The announcement was made by the F1 team on Wednesday, ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix slated for the upcoming weekend.
Albon, a British-born Thai driver, had been the subject of transfer rumors linking him to Red Bull and Mercedes. He was originally contracted with Williams through 2025.
According to Williams, the renewed agreement secures Albon's position with the team "into the new era of Formula 1 regulations," commencing in 2026. However, specific terms of the extension were not disclosed.
Expressing his satisfaction, Albon stated in a press release, "I am incredibly happy to be remaining with Williams Racing and to continue working with such a talented and dedicated team of people."
Currently 28 years old, Albon is in his third consecutive season with Williams, yet to secure a point this year.
Acknowledging the challenges faced, Albon remarked, "It has been a difficult start to the year but since joining Williams, we have made significant progress together and I have seen the huge changes happening behind the scenes to take us back to the front of the grid."
Albon commenced his F1 career in 2019 with Red Bull's junior team but was released by Red Bull in 2020. In the previous season, he contributed 27 points to Williams, aiding the team's ascent to seventh place in the constructors' championship, marking their best result in six years.
James Vowles, Williams team principal, expressed delight over securing Albon's long-term commitment, praising his talent, technical insight, and dedication to the team's resurgence.
The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix is scheduled for Sunday.
